Orr Trophy |
Established in 1993, the Spring Shoot Out has
grown each season. Since the introduction of the Eli-Wyatt
Cup in 1996 the following divisions have
competed for it: all select teams, all A & AA teams, High School
J.V. and Varsity and Seniors. There are currently 21 cups
that are presented for display each spring season.
Since the introduction of the Eli-Wyatt Cup, the
league has created the Howe Trophy for the draft divisions, the
Orr Trophy for the ranked travel divisions,
squirt through bantam, and the Shelley
Looney Trophy for the girls’ divisions. Past
winners can be found in our Archives on line. |
|
The 4 trophies listed above have all been
introduced with the following intent; each season the league
would make the trophy available to the championship team for display
in their local arena until the following season. The names of the players and staff
of each playoff winner in each division will have their names
inscribed on these trophies each season. Once the trophy
is filled with names (the expected life of that award), it will
be presented to the hockey association or club which has won it
the most. After 21 seasons, the expected life of the Eli-Wyatt Cup, the hockey association or club with the most wins will
receive it as a gift from the league for permanent
display in their home arena. At that time a new award will be
built. Although we
haven’t yet established the life span of these new awards, we
intend to retire them in the same manner as the Eli-Wyatt Cup.
Eventually, some of the kids whose names appear
on these trophies will coach kids of their own. The scene
in front of the trophy case, 30 years from today, will probably
go something like this. "Hey Dad, come here. Look at
this trophy; somebody with the same last name as ours won it in
1996". "Yes, that’s my name, and if you look at the
bottom of that plaque, grandpa’s name should be on there too!
He was my coach".

The Eli-Wyatt Cup |

The Howe Trophy
The Howe Trophy is a custom designed and crafted award
introduced in 1998 for teams in the Spring Shoot Out - Metro Hockey
League Draft program. Due to the way spring hockey has been
structured, the draft program was established for kids in the hockey
community that typically were not asked to play and therefore did not
have coaches available to them. The initial year saw 600 kids enter,
followed by 900 in 1999. The trophy is a multi-year award, and will be
retired after that time to the hockey club whose participants win it
the greatest number of times.
