How
this league works.
The following information should help you effectively put a team
together without a lot of prior knowledge on the subject of spring
hockey in the Metro Detroit area. Please remember that this
page is an overview and that additional information can be found by
reviewing the spring league section of this website.
Ice - We provide it.
You do not need to purchase any ice with the exception of tryouts
and practices should you chose to do either. We provide all of
the ice for your games. You will need to choose up to 3 home
arenas. The reason we ask for 3 is that our league also has
what we refer to as a "scheduling calendar". Due to
other ice commitments, ice is not always available at your 1st
choice of arenas on the date you've specified. This calendar
allows you to choose the days your team is available to play and
also allows you to blackout dates that you are not. If filled
in properly and sent to us on a timely basis, the "scheduling
calendar" is an effective way to get games on the dates you'd
like them. On your application you will notice the
following question. " When scheduling your team, should
more weight be applied to the date or the arena?" This
tells us which criteria is most important should we need to make a
choice in the event ice is not available on a date you've
picked.
Rostering documents - We provide them.
All of the paperwork and an explanation of how and when to roster
your team is available in your managers book which you will receive
at our annual coaches and managers meeting. Most of this
information is also available on this website.
Scoresheets - We provide
them.
You will find them available in your managers book which you will
receive at our annual coaches and managers meeting.
Referees - We schedule them
Referees are scheduled by the league and are paid
prior to each game by the teams. Due to some problems with
checks over the past several seasons most referees will not accept a
check as form of payment. A schedule of referee costs, by
division, is available on this website.
Play-Offs - included in
your league fee
The top half of each division qualifies for the play-offs. If
a team in the top half chooses not to participate, the next team
will move up. The cost of the ice for the play-offs is
included in your league fee. You will still need to pay the
referees as you did during the regular season.
Budgeting
We ask that you pay your 10 game league fee at the
coaches and managers meeting annual. For budgeting
purposes we suggest that you plan for 13 regular season games and 16
referees (to cover play-offs).
Scorekeepers
Scorekeepers are provided by several of the arenas
that are affiliated with the league. This season we will
indicate which ones do on the page that lists the arenas.
Finding Players
Most teams are formed by bringing the core of an
existing team. All players must move to their classifications
for fall on April 1st. If you are currently on a house team
and your core group is moving up to the next age group and you are
in need of 2nd year players, we suggest you contact the coaches in
that age group from last fall at your club or a neighboring
club. You will most likely find that some of them are also
moving up and they should be able to provide you with some
prospects. If you are staying at your current age
classification for spring, contact the coaches in the age group
below yours who are also staying there in the spring. They
will almost certainly be losing players moving up. This should
provide the 1st year players you will need.
You should note that prior to talking to any player on an active
roster, you must have permission from that players current coach.
This is by far the best practice, because if you wait until the fall
season has been completed you will find that many of the players
have already committed to another team.
